Immanuel Kant

Short Presentation of Immanuel Kant

Immanuel Kant (1724–1804) was a German philosopher and one of the most influential thinkers in Western philosophy. He was born in Königsberg, Prussia (now Kaliningrad, Russia), and spent his entire life there, teaching and writing.

Kant is best known for his work in epistemology, ethics, and metaphysics. His most famous work, Critique of Pure Reason (1781), revolutionized the way we understand knowledge and experience. He argued that our understanding of the world is shaped not only by sensory input but also by the way our mind structures this input.

In ethics, Kant developed the concept of the categorical imperative, a universal moral law based on reason. He believed that moral actions must come from duty and be universally applicable, not based on consequences.

Kant’s philosophy, often referred to as transcendental idealism, held that we can never know things as they are in themselves (das Ding an sich), only as they appear to us.

His ideas laid the groundwork for much of modern philosophy and influenced areas from political theory to aesthetics.
